I met the guys at NK Theatre Arts many years ago. I was immediately impressed by the tireless work they carried out in my community.
They provide weekly, theatre workshop training in Musical Theatre, Dance and Drama, for Children of all ages, young people and adults. Regardless of ability, disability, status or culture.
The work they do and the shows they perform are nothing short of staggering.
I started to use the Theatre to entertain staff, we would take staff out for an evening at the theatre. We also used the Theatre during the day for large staff meetings or announcements. The facilities and parking were second-to-none.
I could see there was a lack of commerciality within the group. I have been mentoring them now for many years.
We started by changing the way they did fundraising. They were very old fashioned in their approach. Asking local companies to donate funds. These funds were then used to purchase goods and services. Getting cold hard cash out of companies is notoriously difficult.
"Julian is an invaluable part of everything we do here at the theatre. We can't thank him enough for the support"
The quick change was to ask local companies to provide the services and goods required directly. The companies were given benefits such as promotion on NK’s website. They were also given tickets to give customers and staff trips to the theatre.
This approach not only provided the services required but more importantly built a community of local companies who felt an integral part of NK. This level of engagement is far higher than can be achieved by just asking for a cheque.
My old company donated several digital signs this enabled rolling adverts in the bar and foyer area. This gave sponsors additional advertising opportunities in return for their kind support.
In addition to sponsorship etc I’ve been involved with the building and lease issues these continue today. I offered significant advice and support during the pandemic especially with regard to business continuity insurance.
I was very proud last year to be asked to become a trustee of NK Theatre Trust. I love my involvement and hope it lasts for many years to come.

“Julian’s support went far beyond technicalities. Meetings would explore much wider social, budget, finance & educational areas: his vision was broad and inclusive and very much appreciated. Unsurprisingly his company grew and never, in my experience, lost the drive to make its clientele and the “worlds” in which they operated better, more productive and inclusive places. What a mentor and partner: knowledgeable, inspirational and effortless to work with and so rewarding!”
