Never Assume – Just Pick Up the Phone: How One Call Can Unlock New Opportunities

The Power of a Simple Phone Call

In business, it’s easy to rely on emails and digital updates. But sometimes, the simplest way to strengthen client relationships is still the most old-fashioned: a phone call.

A few years ago, I rang an old client just to check in and see how our machine was performing. Everything was working perfectly, and as our conversation wrapped up, the client said:

“I’m glad you called, Julian. I’ve actually got something coming up I think you can help with.”

Just like that, one quick call turned into a brand-new opportunity.

How Catch-Up Calls Build Stronger Relationships

It’s something I see reflected in my current clients too. Take Mike, for example. He insists on chasing overdue invoices himself. Not because he enjoys it, but because it gives him another chance to connect with his customers. He swears it brings in more business.

Emails are convenient, but they’re easy to ignore. A phone call—even a simple voicemail saying, “Hi, I was thinking of you and wanted to check in”—creates a genuine connection that an email rarely achieves.

Why These Calls Often Get Overlooked

Yet, when business gets busy, these catch-up calls are often the first thing to be dropped. That’s a real shame, because these conversations can reignite relationships, remind clients you’re there, and uncover new opportunities you might never expect.

Reignite Opportunities by Reaching Out

So, if you’re looking to generate new work or strengthen existing client relationships, consider picking up the phone and calling someone you haven’t spoken to in a while.

As we used to say at Midshire: never assume. Sometimes, simply being back in plain sight is all it takes.
